A good friend of mine is a police chaplain and mentioned during a phone call that more police officers die from suicide than in the line of duty. Afterward I looked up stats from last year ...and sadly 2019 was a record year for police suicides... 228 current or former officers died by suicide, compared with 172 in 2018.
According to FBI stats, 89 law enforcement officers were killed in line-of-duty incidents in 2019. Of these, 48 officers died as a result of felonious acts, and 41 officers died in accidents.
See our page on Veteran Suicides. An average of 22 veterans daily commit suicide. That's over 8000 yearly.
The 2020 numbers for all categories of suicides are likely to trend upward since, in three last 3 months, 35 million people were put out of work while churches and support groups were considered non essential and were restricted from meeting.
