The Injustice Project was founded by Pastor Bill Carico, his wife Patti, and their daughter Katie, after their prison ministry reached over 200 inmates in more than 25 prisons and local jails around the country, primarily in Virginia and Texas. Most of these are stories about injustice from inmates we know and their family members. Some stories are from the news. Some are from similar organizations or from other clergy. Some are from individuals, active and retired, who have taken an interest in Injustice Project, and include judges, lawyers, private investigators, and law enforcement personnel, at local, state and federal levels.
On September 15, 2014, Katie was arrested and eventually charged with 60 felonies pertaining to over 20 burglaries in Lynchburg and four nearby counties. Even though over $500,000 in jewelry and cash were reported stolen, investigators never found a money trail simply because Katie didn't commit any burglaries.
At the time of her arrest, Katie was a married mother of 3 young daughters and also the owner/operator of a consignment shop. Katie had purchased stolen goods from a customer... not knowing they were stolen. The customer subsequently disappeared and Katie's attorneys chose not to hire a private investigator. Instead they spent over a year pressuring Katie to falsely confess and ask for leniency if she wanted to see her daughters before they were grown. Katie was sentenced to serve almost 20 years without parole as a first time non-violent offender. Her punishment also included $150,000 in restitution to victims that she must begin paying upon her release. After sentencing she was moved to Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women, a Virginia state penitentiary. Due to her long sentence, she was placed in a unit with violent offenders including murderers. During this time Pastor Bill obtained all the case files from his daughter's attorney and began an in-depth review. He soon discovered her attorney had withheld exonerating information, missed at least three alibis, and failed to interview multiple exonerating eye witnesses that prove Katie's innocence. He also found another seven burglaries with the same MO in the same time frame that pointed to the real burglars who set Katie up.
At the appropriate time, Katie's story will be featured on this site and I will release the book I've written that's shows exactly how she was railroaded, as soon as some pending matters are resolved. A handful of people have previewed it. One woman said, "unbelievable..read 29 chapters today...can't stop reading."
And a man who started it while on vacation said. "What a story! I started the book Friday night and couldn't put it down all day Satirday, even while I was in the pool."
In the meantime, learn about the plight of so many innocent people who have been victimized by injustice and what needs to happen to correct and prevent such travesties.
